The Ford F-150 Lightning ushers in a new era of pickups as the first all-electric truck from a mainstream automaker.

What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year

While it’s based on the existing gas-powered F-150, the Lightning is an all-new model for 2022.

Available Trims

Ford offers the F-150 Lighting in Pro, XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trim levels, all in SuperCrew configuration. Two electric motors – one each at the front and rear axles – provide all-wheel drive traction. A standard-range battery promises around 370 km of driving on a single charge, and an optional extended-range option offers a little more than 480 km.

Standard Features

Pro trim comes with a power front trunk lid, lift-assist tailgate, adaptive LED headlights, LED taillights, and 18-inch wheels. Inside, there’s a 12.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and navigation.

Also standard is the Co-Pilot 360 safety suite of forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, backup sensors, and reverse brake assist.

XLT adds hood lighting, 360-degree camera views, power front seats, and heated front seats.

Lariat brings a power tailgate with accent lighting, 20-inch wheels, a 15.5-inch touchscreen, passive keyless entry, an eight-speaker stereo with subwoofer, rain-sensing wipers, heated rear seats, leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control, highway driving assist, and intersection assist.

Finally, Platinum models get 22-inch wheels, 18-speaker audio, BlueCruise driver assist, active parking assist, and a towing tech package.

Key Options

Pro, XLT, and Lariat trims offer Platinum’s tow tech package as option, with trailer backup and hitch assists, reverse guidance, a brake controller, onboard scales, and a trailer camera.

Fuel Economy

As of this writing, Ford had not published energy consumption estimates for the F-150 Lightning.

Competition

The electric pickup truck segment is a niche within the still-growing EV marketplace, so the F-150 Lightning’s competitors are few. The Rivian R1T is available in small numbers as a 2022 model, but the Lightning’s first true competitor will arrive in 2023 when Chevrolet launches the Silverado EV.
